November ’19 Elevator Constructor

Brothers and Sisters,

As of this writing Local 17 has 35 apprentices enrolled in four classes (500, 600, 700 and 800), two working out of town and enrolled in distance learning as well as seven probationaries doing the New Hire classes online through the NEIEP portal. This totals 44 apprentices currently working in the local and accounting for the largest class in well over ten years.

All of the apprentices should have received their appropriate raise based on their results from the Spring semester final. The raise was effective in the first pay period after September 1. If you are unsure about what year you are slotted or what your rate should be, contact Business Manager John Driscoll, Jr. at or 216-431-8088.

The November 8, 2019, December 13, 2019 and January 10, 2020 meetings are Special Called Meetings for the nomination, election and installation of officers of Local 17. Those not presenting a valid reason for non-attendance will be fined.

Local 17’s legislative team of Andy Herf and Jared Holt along with Work Preservation’s Tim Moennich and Kevin Sullivan, Phil Issac of Gable Elevator and Business Manager John Driscoll, Jr. played host to Ohio House members Dick Stein (R-Norwalk), Bride Sweeney (D-Cleveland) and Ohio Senate members Vernon Sykes (D-Akron) , Tina Maharath (D-Canal Winchester) and Stephanie Kunze (R-Hilliard) in events across the state in support of the Elevator Licensing Bill.

Issac hosted a group at the Caxton Building where Gable is modernizing two passenger cars and a freight. During the visit the legislators were given a tour of the machine room and explained the complexity of installing and maintaining an elevator system and the need for a well-trained work force.

It is hoped that this and other visits around the state will convince legislators of the need for licensing in Ohio.
