IUEC Local 17 went 1-2 before being eliminated from the Cleveland Building Trades Softball Tournament. The team, competing this year in the B flight, were blanked by the Electricians 13-0 in their first round effort.
In the consolation round they took a squeeker from Ironworkers 17 B team 7-5 to advance against the Boilermakers 744 where they lost a tight game 14-12.
The Elevator Constructors Local 17 will start their quest for the 2011 Cleveland Building Trades softball tournament crown on Thursday, September 1st at 7pm at James Day Field. They will be competing in the B bracket and if all goes well competing for the championship on Saturday at 2pm.

2011 B bracket
The wife of deceased Brother Ronald Thompson and Mother of Brother Randy Thompson, Marjorie “Margie” Thompson passed away on July 5th. Visitation Saturday 9-10 A.M. at Jardine Funeral Home, 15822 Pearl Rd, Strongsville 44136 with a Memorial Service following at 10a.m.
Retired Brother Robert Trapp passed away. He was 91. He was a veteran of WWII serving in the Army-Air Force and retiree of Local 17 and Otis Elevator. In addition, he was a long time member of the Northeast Yacht Club and recipient of the Key to the City of Mayfield Heights.
Trapp was buried at Knollwood Cemetery on June 1st. He is survived by his daughter Diane and brother Richard as well as many grand and great-grand children.
Retired brother Carl Klokey will be interned at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, 10175 Rawiga Road, Rittman, Ohio on June 20th at 1:30 pm.
Klokey, 66, passed away at his home on May 5th in Lorain after a sudden illness. He was a Navy veteran serving from 1963 to 1967. He worked in the elevator trade until 1987 and retired in 2001. He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Cheryl, and daughters Tracy, Chrissy and Val.
Due to the strong response to the previous welding class put on by NEIEP, a second class has been announced. The course runs for 40 hours and will lead to a 3G and 4G certification. Classes are run from June 13th through the 17th and June 20th through the 24th from 5:15 to 9:15. Any IUEC Local 17 member interested in participating must deposit a $500 check to guarantee attendance. The 2011 Local 17 Golf Outing will be held on Saturday, June 11 at Mallard Creek Golf Course, 34500 East Royalton Road, Columbia Station. The outing will start at 9 am and the cost will be $90 per person. Of course, there will be food and drink at the turn and at the end of the day dinner and door prizes. NEIEP is offering an online training and licensing course called “Rigging and Signalperson.” The course takes three to four hours to complete online. When the student takes the exam they must score at least 70 percent. After successfully passing the online exam, a written and participation exam will be given by the NEIEP area coordinator. The student must pass the written test with an 80 percent and a 100 percent on the hand signals. The rigging and signal persons card is good for three years.
Local 17 is proud to announce the annual Retiree’s Dinner will be held on April 15th at Frank Sterle’s, 1401 East 55th Street. As always, cocktails are served at 5:30 and dinner at 6:30. Retiree’s are free and active members pay $30 at the door.
